Thai traditional massage venues and practitioners are regulated by the Thai Ministry of Public Health's Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Only 4,228 of Thailand's 8,000 to 10,000 spa and massage shops have been certified by the Ministry of Health's Department of Health Service Support as of 2018. In December 2019, UNESCO placed traditional Thai massage to its list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
